The province of Utrecht has for several years used the phrase "Utrecht, knowledge centre par excellence" to establish its position internationally. Cooperating in this effort are the business community and major knowledge institutes within the province -- including the internationally acclaimed Utrecht University and the University Medical Centre of Utrecht, the province’s biggest employer.
Expected growth of working population
Driving this effort is the expected growth, over the coming decades, of the province of Utrecht's working population. Since the economy is internationalising at an increasing rate, employment in the province is will increasingly depending on international trade and on companies that operate internationally. Already more than 1,200 international enterprises have chosen to establish themselves in Utrecht.
This internationalisation has also left its mark on the fields of education and knowledge development. Our universities and colleges increasingly participate in exchange programmes, maintain contacts and enter into agreements with knowledge institutes worldwide.
In view of these trends, it is vital that the provincial government continue to develop policies aimed at the future and to connect to the opportunities that come with growth. The province and the city of Utrecht's ambitions in the area of sustainability already have an international dimension.
