The Provincial Council
The Provincial Council is the highest administrative authority in the province of Utrecht. The Council members are representatives of the people and elected every four years. The province of Utrecht has 47 Provincial Council members (only in Dutch).
Frameworks and supervision
As the province's general administrative body, the Provincial Council makes decisions concerning provincial policies. This task is referred to as framework setting. The Provincial Council also supervises the execution of policies implemented by the Provincial Executive.
Council members represent the residents of the province of Utrecht in political matters. Therefore they want to be well informed about everything that happens in the province, so they maintain contact with residents in various ways. Council members regularly plan working visits, attend consultation meetings and participate in public forums.
Provincial Council elections affect both provincial and national politics. The members of the Provincial Council, who are directly elected by the residents of Utrecht, in turn elect the members of the Senate. We call these indirect elections.
The Provincial Council's additional duties include:
- Adopting the provincial budget
- Formulating general regulations for the benefit of the province
- Implementing regulations delegated to the province by the State
